University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and private health company ORLA Healthcare are now offering a service that allows patients who would normally be admitted to hospital to be treated in their own homes. The service is offered to patients aged 18 or over who meet a set of safety criteria. Those who agree to the programme are then admitted on to ‘virtual wards’ and are set up with Medixine’s remote monitoring technology which puts them in instant contact with doctors, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
So far more than 100 patients have been treated locally at home by the ORLA team and the project continues. UH Bristol and ORLA are currently planning to expand the service beyond Bristol.
